What does your proofreading service include?

There is a huge degree of difference in what companies mean when they say they offer "proofreading". Our professional academic proofreading service will:

  • Ensure your writing is free from spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, using track changes to highlight where corrections have been made;
  • Check any footnotes or references are formatted properly and consistently in your chosen style of referencing; and
  • Check your title page, indexes/table of contents, headings, subheadings, tables, figures and appendices are formatted correctly and consistently.

The idea is that you submit a professional-looking academic paper where your ideas can be clearly understood without being hindered by poor spelling or grammar.  However, there is a limit to proofreading - the content of the paper is untouched, and if you have described an idea poorly (but in acceptable English), your proofreader will not change what you have written.  For this, you would need an editor.

Why should I use your proofreading service?

Some students find that they fully understand the course material they have been given but struggle to accurately put their thoughts and ideas onto paper. We find that this is especially true of international students who are academically very bright but don't have English as their first language.

Our service allows you to submit your work to an expert qualified in your area of study, who will carefully correct any mistakes you have made. Corrections will be made using 'track changes' so that you can see the mistakes. This has two purposes. The first is so that you can learn from your mistakes, and the second is to give you the option of whether to correct the change. This is the correct procedure in professional proofreading. You can very easily choose to 'accept all changes' in your document if you are happy with the corrections suggested by your proofreader.

Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar are really important, as is avoiding colloquialisms. Even trivial flaws in your essay will distract the most sympathetic lecturer from the real content.

Goode spelling and grammaar are like house-work. No won notices it when it's done, but lapses are glairing.

The spelling mistakes in the above sentence are really obvious, aren't they? When you spot them, straight away, you start to doubt the person who made them. Do they really know what they're talking about? That's exactly how your lecturer will feel if they review your writing and find it's full of errors. Do you think they will even consider awarding you with a first class grade if you make errors like those above? Of course not.

While the official amount of points available for correct spelling and grammar are sometimes stated to be around 5% of the overall mark, a lot of grading is done on the 'feel' of the essay (whether or not it should be). This is especially true on Open University courses, where lecturers use a fixed marking criteria and then go through a final stage of reviewing if the essay overall feels like a 1st. If it's full of errors, it won't.

Can't I just run a spell check?

A spell check is simply no substitute for a professional check. Why? Simply because, many errors can't be detected by spell checkers. For example, an atomic typo is a typographical error (usually involving a single letter) that results in a word different from the one intended - prostate instead of prostrate, for example. Spellcheckers are unable to detect atomic typos because the word is spelled correctly - it's just the wrong word so it requires a human eye to see that the context is wrong. Punctuation, word usage and grammar are also extremely difficult for a piece of software to accurately correct.

What's the difference between proofreading and editing?

Often people are uncertain what the difference is between proofreading and editing. Proofreaders go through your work looking for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation. The content itself, the style, flow, quality of sources and organisation are all left alone. Editing involves looking at all of those things and more, with a view to improving the work and increasing the grade.

Is this cheating?

The main point of any academic assignment is to test whether you understood the course material and can answer questions on it - not to test if you can spell or use correct punctuation. Having your work reviewed by an expert for errors is therefore not cheating - it is ensuring that your answer and supporting material is presented in the best way possible. The work you hand in is still your own work that you produced having read your course books and researched the question set for you. Think of our services as polishing what is already there!
